Listen to the LIES spewing forth from the incompetent police officer:
1. The sidewalk outside the UN is NOT federal property
2. Photography is NOT illegal under the so-called Patriot Act
3. Photographers DO NOT have to show their pictures
4. Photographing Police Officers is NOT ILLEGAL
Absolutely PATHETIC!

Have a story to share that we did not cover? Want to discuss something in greater detail? Want to compare Nikon vs. Canon? Post it in our forum - all are welcome.

Cops lie. It’s not just something they do sometimes, it’s the standard operating procedure. Every word that comes out of a cop’s mouth is suspect.
What’s the rest of the story? What happened?
Great that he stood up to them. Shouldn’t have happened in the first place.
I love that: If you have nothing to hide you should let me see it.
mepsipax???
Let me search you if you have nothing to hid?
Just a quick little frisking should do. ;0)
So, what happened? Why’d the video stop? Did the SS appear?
Guy should not have answered any questions (eg where do you work) — it was just an opening for the cop to ask more andmore intrusive questions and deflect any questions asked of her.
Guy should contact ACLU and initiate action. Enough times and you get a class action case.
All we did was embed the video that appears on YouTube. Unfortunately we don’t have any more details
Actually, the UN headquarters in NYC is not legally considered a part of the USA. It is considered international territory…but US laws do apply to the territory, indicating that the police officer was still totally wrong in harassing the photographer.
That cops in full of BS. there is nothing in the PArtiot Act that prohibits filming or taking pictures. The guy should have stopped talking and started leaving and when the cops arrest him, he should sue their ass.
Someone posted more information on one of the Flickr groups. It seems the photographer ended up being detained for some time until he finally caved in and showed his video to higher ranking cops. Since he was told that he could not leave until he showed the video that is illegal imprisonment and coercion. Photographers who have been detained for as little as 20 minutes have sued and won settlements. Believe me I would sue!
As for the Secret Service – to their credit they did not bother to show!
Cops count on people caving.
1. ASK if you are under arrest or if you are free to go. If they don’t arrest you, you are free to go. The more people FAIL to exercise their rights, the more cops and Bloomberg and Kelly will feel like they can walk all over us.
2. In my experience, it’s the Rent-a-Cops that are the worst — the hired goons at corporate headquarters, etc.
3. Contact the ACLU, NYCLU and the CCR (Center for Constitutional Rights).
4. Contact the Civilian Complaints Review Board. They don’t do shit, but who knows, maybe someday things will change.
5. Call your Congressional reps — Senators & Representative.
Lawyer up. If you are under arrest and request a lawyer, they MUST provide you one. IF you are under arrest, NEVER talk to the police without a lawyer present. The cops are legally allowed to LIE to you. IF you are being “detained”, say NOTHING except to demand that they arrest you or that they let you go AND demand a lawyer. ALWAYS demand a lawyer. They want you to believe that asking for a lawyer amounts to an admission of guilt. NOT SO. Silence and legal representation are your RIGHTS.
ohh this is BS
